GENDER PRACTICES OF KYIV

Kyiv Equality Week

At the beginning of March, in celebration of International Women's Day, the Department of Gender Equality of the Kyiv City State Administration’s Department of Social and Veteran Policy organizes Kyiv Equality Week to raise awareness about equal rights and opportunities.

In collaboration with public organizations, municipal institutions, educational establishments, and the academic community, a series of information and educational events take place from March 1 to 7 in a hybrid format.

Throughout these five days, public spaces, educational institutions, and universities host public discussions, presentations, meetings, and guest lectures on topics such as gender policy and women's leadership, the successes and challenges of achieving gender equality in the capital, and both global and local experiences in overcoming inequality.

Notable events during Kyiv Equality Week amid the war:

- guest lecture by Vice-Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Olena Kondratiuk, on "Women's Leadership During the War";
- public discussions featuring Kyiv City Council deputies from the MFO "Kyiv for Equal Opportunities" on Kyiv TV;
- book presentation of IFES's "Men as Allies" with participation from Kyiv City Council deputies and international experts;
- open lecture by Ella Libanova, Director of the Institute of Demography, for listeners and lecturers at the Kyiv Academy of Women's Leadership on "Gender Differences in the Labor Market: Lessons from Nobel Laureate Claudia Goldin for Ukraine";
- awareness-raising activities on "Women, Peace, and Security," focusing on responding to security challenges and threats during martial law and emergency situations;
- book presentations of new releases promoting the values of equality, anti-discrimination, and reducing the impact of stereotypes.

The final event of Kyiv Equality Week is traditionally a ceremonial awards ceremony recognizing women leaders and public organizations for their active efforts in ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men, as well as for achieving gender equality, social, and political justice.
