GENDER PRACTICES OF KYIV

Corporate Gender Policies

The Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a set of guidelines aimed at promoting gender equality and empowering women in the workplace, labor market, and society. Through their implementation, organizations adopt new approaches to supporting female employees, protecting their rights, and ensuring fair treatment in the workplace.

The media company "Kyiv24" plans to join the global network of WEPs signatories, developed by UN Women and the UN Global Compact, to achieve gender equality and empower women in the workplace, labor market, and public life.

As part of the preparation for signing the WEPs, training sessions are being conducted for journalists and employees of the media company on the principles of equality in the workplace.

For instance, Lyudmyla Cherniavska, a trainer from the National Democratic Institute (a long-standing partner of the Kyiv City Administration), conducted a workshop for the company’s team on implementing these principles into the institutional policy, organizational culture, and media content of the broadcasting company. The training was attended by department heads, editors, presenters, and the management team—including the company’s director and her deputy—which demonstrated their leadership support in fostering a gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory corporate culture.

Lyudmyla Cherniavska, trainer at the National Democratic Institute:
‒ "Through ‘real-life stories,’ media professionals were able to identify barriers to creating an inclusive and equitable work environment within the company, assess existing practices and policies, and pinpoint areas for improvement. These include enhancing the gender sensitivity of the organizational culture, which will contribute to the gender sensitivity of media content and, in turn, build greater trust in the broadcasting company among citizens."

With the involvement of the Women in Media NGO and the Commission on Journalistic Ethics, the channel has already developed Gender Equality Policies for its media content. These policies apply to both the content published on platforms and internal team communications.

Moreover, in May 2024, the channel launched a training program for female camera operators, addressing staff shortages and, more importantly, creating new opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated professions.
